Happiness Skills Course

The Key to Happiness

Intro

Life can be tough. While happiness is what we all strive for somehow, it’s also difficult to keep the target in sight. Often, we are distracted by other targets like money and status. We deal with obligations and what we feel is expected from us. We switch to auto-pilot and follow routines and habits. Consequently, we lose the connection with ourselves – the best way to find out what makes us happy. Somehow it gets more difficult to know what makes us happy.

Does that sound familiar? No worries, happiness is learnable. You can learn skills to get you on the happiness path. These skills are about mindsets, health hacks, connections and relationships but also dreams, resources and how and why to let go. This course equips you with happiness skills and you’ll see overwhelm and life’s challenges from another perspective. Happiness will be in your hands which will be empowering.

This course aims to get you to discuss and test happiness skills right away to ensure transformation. While this might be dramatic for some, it will be slower for others. But discussing with course participants and reflecting on learnings is the safest way to get you set up for happiness.

This course runs for 6 weeks. Each week, I’ll share some of my learnings with the class. Then you’ll discuss and reflect with me and the other participants (max 10) how to apply the happiness skills and also if they work for you. You’ll also get action steps you can try out in the week until the next class. The classes run for 90 min and are limited to 10 participants.

Who am I

Ok, what do I know about happiness and why do I teach it?

First of all, hi, I’m Anja. I’m originally from Germany but living in Sydney, Australia since 2009 (so a while). I have two kids and am in my 40s. In my 20s, I struggled with severe depression and anxiety coupled with bulimia. I was at the point where I didn’t really see the point in living – why all the hassle? For what?

Somehow, I started to look into happiness and it became clear that it was the reason to keep living. Since I had no clue how to be happy, I started exploring, observing and testing. There is so much knowledge about happiness available, ancient wisdom, common knowledge and scientific research. It was overwhelming and took me years to incorporate happiness in my life.

In 2020, I was diagnosed with breast cancer and simultaneously separated from my husband. COVID lockdowns made my year of treatments difficult including always getting tested in time and being isolated from the community. Also, my kids were 2 and 5 and my daughter had just started school. After the cancer year, I struggled with the aftermath and many health issues.

I only realised afterwards how hard the year was but I started to understand that I had to explore more aspects about happiness. Particularly about the part of taking breaks and looking after myself. It was a tough learning journey and I went deep into scientific research and life skill courses.

Today, I have healed most of my health issues. I appreciate life and often feel light and joyful. I nurture my many connections with family, friends and community and hardly ever feel lonely – the painful feeling of loneliness. I laugh often and cry so much less. Even though it is still difficult, I am getting better and better in taking breaks and looking after myself. I feel connected with myself and the world and I feel like I’m living life fully and not just rushing through it.

What’s Inside Description – Week by Week

The course is based on my Exploring Happiness Framework and Happiness Skills.

Week 1: Dreams

The first week sets you up for long-term goals – dreams. It also explores what dreams are, why they are important and how to deal with them engaging happiness skills. We discuss dreams, priorities, goals and purpose.

Week 2: Resources

In the second week, you’ll explore happiness skills around the resources you have available and how to interpret your means. This is where you most likely start thinking differently about money, time, energy and your belongings.

Week 3: Mindset

The third week deals with the mindset and how you can use hormones, chemistry, triggers and brain regions to get your brain onto speed to what you really want from life. Happiness skills also address awareness and positive psychology to leverage all your mind has to offer in favour of happiness.

Week 4: Health

In week 4, you will reflect on the health levers you have available to stimulate your happiness. If the machine doesn’t run smoothly, it’s hard to be happy. Happiness skills help you navigate nourishing, moving and resting your body.

Week 5: Connections

In week 5, you’ll focus on connections and happiness skills around different types of connections and relationships. Humans thrive with connections and they can be a strong happiness maker if you approach them appropriately. The two connections types Love (family and friends) and Community (neighbours, local shop attendants, work colleagues, fellow parents/dog owners/gym members etc). and their importance are unpacked.

Week 6: Letting go

Week 6 is all about what seems to be “the magic of happiness”. Letting go in a variety of aspects is essential to truly embrace happiness. Don’t worry, you don’t have to sell all your belongings and move to a monastery. You’ll learn other ways to let go such as forgiving, fun&play, embracing creativity and spirituality.
